This is either teak or a similar wood. I've had to move pieces like this. You can't possibly imagine how heavy they are. It's mind boggling
I've owned a few pieces like this. The problem is that there are always little pockets of rot and decay deep down in the crevices, and in time, especially in a humid climate, it spreads until the entire piece disintegrates.

Songkran. Most foreigners hate it now and many, including me, fly out to countries for the 17 days(!) it persists in some provinces -- because foreigners have completely subverted it into something it never was, and was never meant to be. It was supposed to be the quiet, gentle and respectful cleansing of hands of feet of the elderly, by the younger people, and that's what it was for eons -- until the white man came. Now it's just a miserable free-for-all of rudeness and assault. I used the word I meant to use: Assault. Thanks, foreigners. I sat in an open-sided restaurant one day, eating a meal. A pickup full of foreigners and Asians pulled up three meters from the diners and hosed them with high-pressure, motor-driven water cannons, drawing from a 200 gallon tank mounted in the bed of the truck. All their meals and dishes went flying, plates smashed against the walls. The restaurant was decimated and reduced to chaos and fear. I was spared probably only because I was at a table in the back, in the corner. The children were terrified, screaming. The Thai family in the front, who took the brunt of the attack, were reduced to utter shock and tears, splattered with bits of food and hit by pieces of broken dishes. Then this group of Songkran revelers screeched off, all laughing hysterically, on to the next batch of victims. In the US, how long would this BS persist until someone simply took them out with a Glock? I'm betting an hour. There is a video circulating of a well-dressed elderly couple walking out from a monastery carrying a laptop. A group of "revelers" happened upon them and commenced to hose them. The elderly couple pleaded, please, not the laptop -- that is owned by the monks. So the revelers targeted it all the more, until it was ruined from water. And the Thai government just LOVES and embraces and organizes this insanity. That's what Songkran is now. Sounds like fun, eh?
